High Crotch Double Leg Takedown

Executing the High Crotch Double Leg Takedown as a way to get your opponent on the ground, is an excellent choice.

One of the things to remember is to have good head positioning, if not, you’ll get caught in a guillotine and put to sleep quick. For those of you who are using this move in MMA or a street fight, your best bet would be to set it up in order to disguise the attack.

You won’t be setting it up with a collar tie like Olympic wrestlers do, because your situation doesn’t call for it. Meaning, you’re not in the sport of wrestling, and you and your opponent are not in the wrestling stance.

In this article you’ll be shown how to secure the high crotch double leg takedown for any situation. So let’s get into it.

High Crotch Double Let Takedown for Wrestlers

In your wrestling stance, the first thing you want to do is attack the hand and secure wrist control. Then you want to take your free hand and reach for the back of your opponent’s neck securing a collar tie.

Nine times out of ten your opponents first instinct will be to secure a collar tie of his own. The only difference is you have the advantage because you’ve secured wrist control, and have your collar tie on the inside.

The next step is to lift up your elbow that’s securing the collar tie, while simultaneously releasing the grip you have on your opponents wrist.

You then take the hand that had the wrist control and shoot it through the your opponent’s leg; executing what is called your penetration step.

When doing an effective penetration step; you step in, drop your lead knee over your toe, your trail leg will swing up, and you complete the attack on your opponent. In this case it’s the high crotch double leg takedown.

Now that you have your arm through your opponent’s leg you want to pull and the leg close to you, step up, turn inward, grab both of your opponent’s leg then drive through for the finish.

Some trainers ask me if they need to lift up their opponent while driving through. The answer is no, because it’s simply not needed. Keep the move simple and don’t try to be Hercules.

You can leave the lifting your opponent off his feet for MMA or a street fight. Yes, there are wrestling moves where you can lift and opponent and slam him, but not for this move. It’s not needed.

What To Remember When Doing This Takedown

The most important thing to remember when doing this type of takedown is positioning. It’s imperative that when you penetrate the leg and have your back hand deep, you need to keep your head up and back straight.

The reason for this is that if you have your back bent and your head low, you can get caught in a guillotine, and a guillotine is a wrestlers worst nightmare.

Are there ways to escape the guillotine? Of course there are, read this The Best Way To Escape A Guillotine scroll to the bottom and read.

The best advice I can give is not to get caught in one in the first place, because although you can escape a guillotine, fighters rarely do, especially if it’s in deep.

High Crotch Takedown For MMA

As I said earlier, if you want to do this takedown for MMA or the streets you’re going to have to adjust the penetration a bit.

The reason for this is that the mma cage canvas, and the concrete on the street are very solid. Of course, the concrete on the street being harder. You can easily shatter your knee if you drop it down to the ground.

You don’t want to penetrate inward dropping your knee like Olympic wrestlers do. They train and have competition on cushioned matts. On top of that they’re allowed to wear knee pads to cushion dropping their knees for takedown like this.

What you’re going to do is follow the same steps as the high crotch takedown for wrestlers, the only adjustment would be to lunge in on the penetration instead of dropping your knee. That’s it!

How To Defend Against The High Crotch Double Leg Takedown

Now that you’ve learned how to do the high crotch double leg takedown, I’m going to go through the steps on how you can defend against the move.

If your opponent has penetrated and has secured your leg (deep on a high crotch), the first thing you want to do is take your near had and destroy his head.

Meaning you was to take you hand, create a “v” and place it on the back of his lower head. Then you want to push down and away from you. You then want to curl you leg upward and turn your body away to create a different angle.

You should end up at the side of your opponent. Next you want to use your free hand to secure a belly whizzer, and then knee sprawl down. When you sprawl down you want to start walking your hip until it’s over your opponents head.

Once there you can transition into your next move.

When doing the high crotch double leg takedown remember to keep your back straight and head up. This is to prevent yourself from getting caught in a guillotine.

When doing the high crotch takedown in MMA or in the streets remember to adjust the move so you’re not slamming your knee onto the concrete.

And lastly, you need to learn how to defend yourself if someone tries the move on you. In wrestling always learn to execute a move on both sides of your opponent. And always learn how to defend yourself against the same move.

Single Leg Sweep From Guard

Today I’m going to go over the Single Leg Sweep From Guard. This is a move commonly used in wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu. From the single leg guard position you can do various moves such as leg locks and sweeps. It can put you at a great advantage, and like with anything else it’s all about right positioning. Below are the steps to execute the move properly.

Choose A side To Execute From

In order to master this move I recommend you practicing it from both sides of your body. What I mean is if you are right handed practice from that angle but also practice the move from your left side. Sometimes you won’t be able to do the move from your strong side so get in the habit of doing it from both sides.

Position Both Legs Properly

In order to do the move it is important that you position your legs properly. One leg has to be on the inside and one on the outside. So for example you will use your right leg as a barrier between you and your opponent by placing it on their hip. this is the leg that’s on the inside. Your left leg now has to be placed on the outside of your opponents leg because it is now going to be used to help you sit up.

Kick up with your left leg (the leg on the outside) then as you are bringing your leg down push yourself up to a seated position. Kicking up the leg is to give you momentum to sit up and continue with the move.

Keep in mind that when you are seated up your left leg is wrapped behind the leg of your opponent. It’s going to help with the sweep. Once in a seated position you then take your right hand and hook it around the back of the knee of your opponent. You now need to use your left hand and right as a base to pull yourself up to your feet, as your do so your left leg needs to sweep the leg of your opponent.

Remember to keep holding on to your opponents leg when you stand up. This is so you can swing the leg to one side and move in to gain side control. From side control you dominate using a number of moves, it’s up to you which ones you want to put on your opponent. Below is a video of how to do the single leg sweep with Gi.

MMA Standing Guillotine Choke

Today we’re going to go over the Standing Guillotine Choke used in Judo, Wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It is certainly a move that many MMA fighters have used to choke out their opponents until thy were unconscious. If not applied properly your opponent can slip out and counter the move.

In this article i will go through the steps of applying the standing guillotine choke so you opponent can’t get out of it. I will also go over the possible defenses your opponent can use against you while applying the choke. These are things you can look out for to fend against them.

What Is A Guillotine Choke?

A guillotine choke, also known as Mae Hadaka Jime, meaning “front naked choke” in judo, is a chokehold in martial arts and wrestling applied from in front of the opponent. The choke involves using the arms to encircle the opponent’s neck in a fashion similar to a guillotine.

The simplified word for this is called a wind choke. The choke does two things; prevents air flow to the lungs and blood to the flow to the head. When executed from the ground, the person applying it will try to control the opponent by the hips by using a close guard or something similarly effective.

When the guard is applied it prevents the opponent from escaping the hold, and allows you to be able to apply additional pressure by extending the hips. It is a very deadly maneuver when performed correctly.

The arm is wrapped around the trachea (wind pipe) and the hands are clasped. Pressure is applied upwards to restrict blood flow to the head, eventually causing unconsciousness and, if applied for more time, even death. So now you can see why fighters have this move in their arsenal.

How To Do A Standing Guillotine

The first thing you have to do is get in position to capture your opponent in the guillotine. Sometimes you are lucky enough to execute the move after your opponent has ducked his head under your armpit and grabbed you by the waist in an attempt to take you down. Whatever way you get in position is fine, all that matters is the execution.

The major thing with a standing guillotine is that you are more susceptible to being driven back and losing balance. When your opponent knows you have him in a choke position instinctively he will try to push you backwards or trip you to the ground. So at that moment instead of reaching down for the choke and clasping the hands you should  clasp your wrist until you know your base is stable and you are on balance.

Don’t let the choke go. Keep standing and maintain a good posture to lift up and pull towards yourself.  If you are in a cage it would be ideal to push your opponent into the cage with the choke putting pressure and forcing more momentum into the choke as his body will have no where to go and will be pushed towards your body.

The key to great execution is applying as much pressure as you can to squeeze your opponents head until he submits or passes out due to lack of air and blood circulation. Any leverage that helps with that is perfect!

How To Do A Kimura From Mount

Guillotine From Guard Position

When you apply the guillotine from the ground position you will primarily be focused on controlling your opponent with your hips, and being sure that you close your guard to lock in your opponent. The closed guard will prevent your opponent from escaping the choke and gaining position as well as applying additional pressure by extending the hips.

Again, it’s all about focus and paying attention to what you are doing and the movement of your opponent. While he is in your closed guard your goal is to prevent him from assuming good posture. Now stay tight to their shoulders and squeeze with your arms, pulling your opponent’s head into your chest to finish the choke.

Guillotine_choke_escape

Guillotine Choke Escape

Escape 1 – Step & Lift Method

This method is effective against a standing guillotine choke. You can easily escape the choke if you react quick enough. The best defense against any choke is to avoid getting in to one. That is something you have to start being aware of. You need to practice in the gym awareness and having quick responses to your training partner’s offensive moves.

So the first thing to do when someone has you in a guillotine lock is to push against the opponent’s thigh, and turn your head to the side to prevent him from putting pressure to your trachea (windpipe).

Then you encircle his right knee with your left arm. Lift him up and throw a takedown. Sometimes you will be facing a bigger opponent that you can’t life up. That’s okay. You have to use an alternative method. You will have to buckle his knee to get him off balance. The escape from the guillotine extends the opponent’s arm and as soon as he lands to the ground, you can transition into an arm and shoulder lock.

Escape 2 – The Stack Escape

When you are in a guillotine choke from guard position you simply take your right arm and wrap it around your opponents until it reaches his back.

This will alleviate some of the pressure of the choke. Then you want to stack him by driving your shoulder into his neck. You do this by propping both your legs up into a sprawl stance where you are on the ball of your feet.

Use your two feet to push forward; driving your shoulder into his neck.  down on your opponent’s shoulder and stacking up to stop him from stretching you out. Depending on how tight the choke is you can turn your chin into his shoulder to get more oxygen.

Your next move is to close your legs together put your hand on his knee and push his leg down. If done correctly your hips will come past his legs. Once there, you can twist to your side and push your opponents leg out further with your hand. This will create space for you to move your legs out and gain side control position.

Guillotine Choke UFC

UFC is always the best place to see these types of moves we talk about on our blog. This is because two people are fighting in real life and are executing real MMA moves on an opponent that if fighting them back and resisting every move. This is what you can expect out on the street in a real fight or during a competition bout.

Escape 3 – Half Guard Guillotine Defense

So this is a simple break down of the Half guard Guillotine Defense/escape. First put your arm around the opponent’s shoulder and start pulling tight. This is to alleviate some of the straight of the choke. The objective that your opponent is trying to reach is to stretch you out as much as possible. If you can keep yourself tight to him, you can prevent him from pulling his shoulders back and take away a lot of pressure from his choke.

Wrap your other arm to over his hips. Then you want to roll through the side and reach up to pull his choking hands down. This will break his grip and create an opening for an arm triangle.

Guillotine Choke Is a Myth

Brian Ebersole was a UFC fighter who said that the rear naked choke is a myth. Strange thing he has been submitted by chokes 3 times, once including a guillotine, so I think he is high on something or sippin’ a little too much Hennessy. Anyhow people on the site wanted me to address it so all I can say is that the guillotine is not a myth and it does work. How To Do A Single Leg Takedown

MMA takedown setup technique

One of the most basic moves you will learn while training in wrestling is the Single Leg Takedown. It will be one of the first moves you learn with your wrestling coach along with How To Do The Double Leg Takedown. The single leg takedown is effective in mixed martial arts competition when your stand up game is not working or you have it apart of your overall fight strategy.

The single leg takedown is also effective in a street fight against a bigger opponent. When in a street fight against a larger opponent your two worries should be him throwing wild punches and landed one. If you are smaller chances are it will knock you out cold. The second fear you should have is him successfully executing a takedown and landing on top of you in a full mount position.

You know his next move will be to ground and pound you with all his strength and might. Of course you train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling to effectively protect yourself on the ground, but sometimes it doesn’t work in your favor. That is the reality of it all. And sometimes no matter how good you are on the ground sometimes you will lose.

Look at the greatest UFC and Jiu-Jistu fighters as an example. Some of the greatest fighters get submitted on the ground or knocked out on the ground while their opponent is facing them. Again, that’s the reality of it all. You win some you lose some. Anyhow back to the lesson.

How To Do A Single Leg Takedown

1 – Set Up Your Takedown

One of the single leg takedown mistakes is not setting up your takedown. People who have no experience in fighting will be in a fight and shoot (wrestling term) their body towards their opponent in hopes of grabbing their leg and bringing them to the ground. But as soon as their opponent sees them shooting in they raise their knee and you get hit in the face by it. Or they’ll see you shooting in and move out of the way and you fall straight to the ground.

You have to set up a move like a single leg takedown by jabbing or hooking them. Some fighters use a fake to the top then go in for the takedown. Whatever method you use to set up the takedown make sure that it is effective. There is nothing wort than getting kicked in your face when going in for a predictable takedown.

2 – Leg Grab

After the set up you have to shoot in for the single leg grab. Timing is everything with this move, that’s why it will take hours of practice to perfect. When you go for your shot remember to keep your elbows as close to your sides as possible. If you do this right, it will be nearly impossible for your opponent to defend.

The footwork for the shot is fairly simple. First you take your leg closest to the leg you are attacking and step outside of that leg. This is called the penetration step, the deeper you get the leg the better, just do not over extend yourself. Then you will use your hips to drive his leg up once you’ve grabbed it, this will feel like a hip thrust from a lunge.

You have to grab the leg as soon as possible. Remember to keep your arms tight to your sides as I mentioned before. Don’t reach out to grab the leg, instead lock your arms around the leg at the knee joint when your chest is near his side.

Single Leg Takedown BJJ

Doing a single leg takedown in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a bit different than MMA. Especially when you are in competition. In BJJ competitions you can do Gi or no Gi and this can effect your set up to the takedown in different ways. There are different set up techniques in these two different situations.

In BJJ Gi competition your competitor can latch onto grips with the gi, and fighting through the grips can be incredibly difficult. It is said that often times good wrestlers who get into BJJ with no grip fighting ability are slowed down by the grips or completely stopped in some cases. I have seen this to be true but all it takes is practice to get the hang of things and the wrestler will fit right in when it comes to defending that.

Below is a video of set ups and execution of Single Leg & Double Leg Takedowns

Single Leg Takedown Highlights

MMA Shoot Takedown

In martial arts or any other combat sport a takedown is a technique that involves off-balancing an opponent and bringing him or her to the ground. When this move or technique is executed the objective is for the attacker to land on top.

The process of quickly advancing on an opponent and attempting a takedown is known as shooting for a takedown, or simply shooting. This is what it’s called in the wrestling, BJJ, and MMA world. The technique really originated from wrestling and expanded into different martial art forms.

Takedowns are usually distinguished from throws by the forward motion and target of advancement (typically the legs); the terms are used interchangeably for techniques. Takedowns are featured in all forms of wrestling and stand-up grappling.

Proper Takedown Technique

As I said many times there is a right and wrong way to execute moves and techniques withing wrestling and mixed martial arts in general. You pull off a move then you can have your opponent in a world of hurt. If you fail to be in the proper position or do a move that’s anticipated by your opponent you can be knocked out or submitted with ease.

When conducting a single leg takedown there are simple rules to remember:

1. Setup The Single Leg Takedown

2. When you shoot remember to keep your elbows as close to your sides as possible

3. When you shoot use your hips and legs do not bend over to grab the leg

4. Take your leg closest to the leg you are attacking and step outside of that leg

5. Never step directly into your opponent this will make him sprawl or put you into a guillotine.

6. Step in at and angle and hook the leg closest to you pressing your head against your opponents mid-section. Keep your head on the outside position. It’s the safest

7. Once you have a grip on your opponent’s leg, you must control their leg correctly to prevent their escape.

8. Finish the leg takedown by driving into your opponent and lifting him up or twisting your body so he can spin to the ground. Adjust and amend the technique as you choose

single leg defense

Single Leg Takedown Defense

The best single leg takedown defenseis the Single Leg Sprawl. A sprawl is a wrestling takedown move used in other forms of martial arts such as MMA and BJJ.

The sprawl is performed by scooting the legs backwards, so as to land on the upper back of the opponent attempting the takedown. If you witness this you will see one guy hunched over the back of his opponent pushing down on his neck and sprawling out both of his legs behind him. The resultant position is also known as a sprawl or sprawling position.

You can do this for a single or double leg takedown if done correctly you will effectively defend yourself from a takedown.

doubleleg takedown in wrestling

I’m going to cover a few Double Leg Takedown Drills in this article. The double leg takedown is one of the most basic takedowns you will learn in wrestling along with the Single Leg Takedown. Wrestling is an important aspect of mma because it allows you to take your opponent to the ground if your stand up game is not working in a fight.

Sometimes you can’t get off the combination strikes you want. Or you can be trying to punch and kick your opponent but he’s anticipating your every move and moving out of the way making it hard to land anything. That’s when you can rely on your wrestling to set up a takedown and try to beat him on the grown.

How To Sprawl In MMA

To be honest the majority of fights do end up on the ground so it’s good to have some wrestling in your mma arsenal. Don’t only practice in the gym and at home but try to watch some Olympic wrestling and mma fights of strong wrestlers. This will help you improve your techniques. If you see a move you like but can’t seem to pull it off at the gym, you can always adjust it to fit your size and strength. Nothing wrong with taking a move and amending it to your satisfaction. it’s done in martial arts all the time.

Double Leg Takedown Steps

Double Leg Takedowns in mma and double leg takedowns in bjj are the same. These moves stem from Greco wrestling and teach the same steps in how to execute the move.  There are advanced variation on how to apply the technique but for now I will just go over the straight forward basics. Below are the steps on how to do the move.

We will start off with how to do the takedown without a set up and in the second half of this post get into how to do a takedown with a set up.  In a real situation if you are at a distance between you opponent the wise thing to do would be to set up your takedown. This is to disguise it so your opponent won’t anticipate the move and counter it. First you have to learn how to do the move and after you master that you will learn how to set it up.

double leg takedown steps

Staggered Stance

In order to do a double leg takedown you have to get in the proper stance. This stance is called the Staggered Stance. It’s when you bend your knees and crouch down your body to lower your center of gravity.

You can do a double leg takedown from a squared stance but it will take you more time to get your feet into the correct position since your lead (front) leg is the leg used to penetrate.

Set Your Feet And Body Position

To execute the takedown you are going to need to take what is called a “shot” that is when you shoot into your opponent. The power of your shot is generated from your trail properly known as your back leg. Make sure your trail leg is firmly planted slightly behind before you take your penetration step.

Again, your body needs to in a low stance position.  Just simply bend your knees and lower your body while keeping your head up and back straight. This will ensure that you’re in a good position in order to penetrate your opponent’s defense.

double_leg_takedown-drop_kneeTake A Deep Step & Drop Your Knee

The plan here is to push off of your back foot and take a deep penetration step two-to-three feet in front of you. This takes some practice so it’s good that you are doing this at home or at your mma gym.

You shouldn’t step so far that you lose balance, but you do want a large enough step to gain enough momentum to penetrate your opponent’s defense and get to his or her legs.

The next step is to roll over your front toe, dropping the knee of your lead leg to the mat in front of you like the picture shown above.

One thing you have to remember while doing this move is not to make the mistake of dropping to the knee of your trail leg or let the knee of your trail leg rest on the mat at any time. It is alright if your trail leg grazes the mat as you shoot, but anytime you drop both of your knees in front of your opponent, he can easily do a double leg takedown defense move called a sprawl.

This step is the most basic but to pull it off with good timing and position takes constant practice. To become good at it I suggest you practice it often on your team mate in the gym or work out partner at home.

Snake The Legs

As you drop to your knee and hit your opponent’s hips with your shoulder, use both of your arms to control both of your opponent’s legs.

To do this you will have to do what many wrestlers called “snaking” that is when you place your arms around the back of your opponent’s knees and to the inside of their calves.

You’re then going to pull their legs toward you tightly. You should keep in mind that won’t have much success trying to out-muscle your opponent above the knees because typically their hips and thighs will be too strong.

Especially with bigger guys some of them have thighs the size of your head lol. And also, If you try to control the legs too low you will most likely take your upper body out of position. The back of the knee is what you want to control.

Your next objective is to step up with your outside leg, which should be your trail leg. What you want to do is step a good distance away from your body and to the side of you so you can push off of this leg to drive your opponent to the mat. The bend of your knee when you do this should be slightly greater than 90 degrees. It’s important to stay in good position with your head and chest up, (your back straight) and with your opponent’s legs pulled tightly to your body.

Execute The Takedown

The final step in this double leg takedown move is to execute the takedown. After your initial step across your opponent’s body, keep running through him. Keep your knees bent and your butt down so you have enough power to drive your opponent’s weight. Take big steps to the outside of your opponent’s body, at a slight angle.

One mistake that beginners make is trying to drive directly forward or to the side. You should never do this because it will put you in an awkward position that your opponent can capitalize off of. Instead, use your head and shoulder to drive your opponent to a slight angle. As you do this, pull your opponent’s legs in a sweeping motion towards the shoulder of your trail leg.

MMA Takedown Setups

In MMA the fighters set up leg takedowns with strike moves.

You will see a fighter throw punch combos and while his opponent is distracted trying to block those punches he shoots in for a double leg takedown.

Or a fighter will throw kicks and a punch and shoot in for a takedown. In wrestling the set ups are a bit different because you can’t punch or kick. Most set ups are from close range after a couple of faints or off of a grapple move.

The reason why it’s a smart idea to set up a takdown is because it distracts your opponent form anticipating your move. if your opponent anticipates the takedown he can easly defend it. So a set up masks your intentions.

Today we go over another technique you absolutely need in your arsenal to defend yourself against a shoot and takedown attack. And the defense move is called a “Sprawl”. A Sprawl is not only used in mixed martial arts but it is also used in wrestling. It is a major defense move that you can use against your opponent to remain in control of the fight.
