How To Do An Armbar From Mount

An armbar is really difficult to do. You have to have the ability to see the opportunity, time it well, then execute. The first thing you want to do from the mount is see an opening or opportunity. When your mounted on top of your opponent and his arms are trying to pull you in so you don’t hit him, or his arms are bent trying to fend you off, this is not a good time to try and pull off an armbar.

The reason for this is that they will be anticipating your every more while they are on the bottom trying to fend you off. It is best to wait for the right time to get him into the armbar manuever.  When you practice jui-jitsu with the right teacher you will always be told not to jump into a move, but rather wait for the right time to execute it. You will always hear your teacher repeat to you that to should set up a move before trying to pull it off. Or he will advise you not to go directly into the move but soften up your opponent first so you can execute the move more easily.

This is something you should not only keep in mind for the armbar from mount but also every move you do. Be a patient warrior. If you rush into a move you can make big mistakes that your opponent will capitalize on.

1) While Your opponentis on his back transition into mounting him

2) Set up your opponent for the armbar (do ground and pound or moves that set up the armbar)

3) Apply the armbar by holding your opponents forearm with both hands and make sure his wrist is facing upwards

4) Position your legs so your knees are bent and his arm and elbow is between your legs

5) The next step is to place one of your legs over his chest and the other over his face. In essence, this is one leg on each side of the arm while keeping his elbow straight by continuing to pull his wrist towards you.

6) The final step is to pull his wrist to your chest and apply upwards pressure from your hips. Very little pressure is necessary to make the hold effective.

If done properly you will put enough straint on your opponents arm that he will tap out in competition or cry like a baby during a street fight. My advice is not use more force than necessary against someone or you will have to explain to a court of law why you used excessive force! The reason why we use martial arts against someone is not to kill them, but to use enough force necessary to subdue them so you can escape and live another day. Please keep that in mind as a martial arts warrior.
