The Shoulder Roll, Philly Shell Defense

There are many boxing fans that marvel at a fighter when they see the Shoulder Roll or Philly Shell Defense. It has to be the most popular self defense move of all time; as far as boxing is concerned.

Is it the most effective defense for a fighter? Well, it all depends on who you ask. If it was the best form of defense against punches then every fighter would be using it, and that’s just not the case.

The truth is up until Floyd Mayweather Jr. retired, he was pretty much the only fighter using it predominantly.

Other fighters of his era have used it a bit, but not as dominant as he has. Floyd has truly perfected the shoulder roll, and has made it as famous as it is today.

In this article I will use the words Philly Shell and Shoulder Roll interchangeably, because they both incorporate the same moves. Depending on who you are, you’ll use one name over the other, or use both names.

Who Invented The Shoulder Roll – Philly Shell?

The Philly Shell or shoulder roll is not linked to a single creator. Some of the old school fighters use to use it as a defensive move.

This is why you saw a few old fighters use it around the same time as each other, because it was being taught in a few gyms at that time.

The move has grown in many forms to what it is today. Below are a list of boxers, from old school to new school, that has used the shoulder roll predominantly throughout their careers.

How To Do The Shoulder Roll/Philly Shell

As I stated earlier, the shoulder roll has advanced over the years into what it is today. Below are the steps to take to execute the modern day shoulder roll.

In the regular orthodox fighting stance you want to put your lead hand over your stomach. This hand is going to block and protect punches that are thrown at your ribs, liver, and stomach.

Now take your rear hand and place it diagonally across your solar plexus, but not all the way across. You want it to stop right where your chin is, and tuck it slightly behind your shoulder.

This hand is used to catch the jab, and can also be used to block any left hook that is thrown to the right side of your head.

You want everything to be nice and tight so that when your opponent launches punches towards you, you are able to defend your body from all angles.

The Philly Shell is a great defensive move to protect yourself, and also counter punch your opponent. You have to be able to get in the stance properly, in order to capitalize on this defensive move.

How To Use The Philly Shell

In the previous section I wrote how to get into the stance of the Philly Shell, and briefly went into how to use the stance.

In this section I will expand on how to use the Philly Shell effectively.

The right hand, which is your rear hand, can be used to block several punches.

It can be used to catch the jab, block a hook to the head, or block a hook to the right side of your body using your elbow and forearm.

Your lead shoulder can be used to protect your head and face against a jab from your opponents right hand. What you would do is roll your shoulder with the punch being thrown.

use your shoulder to block the jab, and roll with it. You can do a major roll or a slight roll. It all depends on the type of punch being thrown at you. Is it a right hand jab or a heavy right hand.

The reason why you want to roll with the punch is because it takes off some of the sting of the punch.

As for your lead arm, as I mentioned earlier, it’s used to protect punches from hitting your mid section or side part of your body.

If your opponent throws a jab to the body or a hook to your liver, you can simply use the forearm of your lead hand to block it.

When shoulder rolling you have many options to then counterpunch. I won’t get into any of that today because I actually want to write a part two to this article.

You can shoulder roll and counter with a straight right, you can shoulder roll and counter with a right cross. You can even shoulder roll and counter with a right hand uppercut.

You have many options to counterpunch, and my advise is to take advantage of it. I always tell my students that you simply can’t win a fight using only defense.

Your defense can block punches or make your opponent miss with punches. But in order to have a chance at winning the fight you have to throw punches.

In conclusion, the Philly Shell/Shoulder Roll is a great defensive move that has been used in boxing for decades.

It’s a move that has been perfected by the likes of Bernard Hopkins, James Tony, and Floyd Mayweather. As I stated earlier Floyd looks like he’s the last fighter to use it as a predominate defensive move.

Floyd has retired and is teaching the Philly Shell to his protégé Gervonta “Tank” Davis, but Davis does not use it much as his main style of defense.

The Philly Shell is good but it should only be used by skilled fighters. I as well as many coaches and trainers agree that we don’t teach this to new fighters as a basic defensive move.

The Philly Shell technique is taught to fighters that have experience, and want to add it to their defensive repertoire. It’s not for new fighters to learn.

The reason being is that it can be a dangerous defensive style to fight with if you don’t know what you’re doing. It really takes years to perfect.

New fighters are not taught this style of defense because it’s not the most effective way to learn how to fight and defend yourself as someone new learning how to box.

But if you have some years of fighting under your belt, and would like to learn it in order to perhaps add it to your skill set, then go right ahead. It won’t hurt!

How To Throw An Overhand Right

Today I’m going to talk about How To Throw An Overhand Right. This type of punch if landed correctly, can really devastate your opponent.

The overhand right is known by some as a power punch because of the force at which it’s thrown. If it hits your opponent right on the chin, with enough force, it will drop him like a sack of potatoes.

Even if the punch hits him good in the face, chances are he will stumble back or even be disoriented from the punch. This will give you a chance to follow up with several combination punches.

Just like a lead hook an overhand right is a punch that you shouldn’t try to parry. The reason for this is that these types of power punches are ineffective against a parry. Remember, a parry is most effective against a straight punch.

The best defense against a power punch such as a lead hook or an overhand right is a slip, block, or moving entirely out of the way.

The Correct Way To Throw A Overhand Right

How To Throw An Overhand Right

First you want to get into your proper boxing stance. In this example we will go with the orthodox style. The orthodox style is the boxing style for those who are right handed.

The first motion is your left foot is going to step out at an angle. Depending on where you’re taught boxing it is known as the clock movement.

This is among more modern teachings of boxing, you old school guys wouldn’t be familiar with this :).

What you’ll do is step out with your left leg to about 11am on the clock. You want to put pressure on that left leg as you follow up with your overhand right. Always remember to rotate your hips.

I always think it’s a good idea to follow up with your right leg as you are throwing your overhand right.

This is because it gives the overhand more momentum and it also closes your stance, if you don’t follow up with the right leg you will complete the overhand in a wide stance.

If somehow you go for the overhand right and your opponent defends against it, you can leave yourself wide open for a counter, and it would be worst for you standing in a wide stance position.

When To Use An Overhand Right

The best time to execute an overhand right is while your opponent is throwing a jab. Remember, we are doing all moves in the orthodox stance.

When your opponent throws a jab, which will be with his left hand, you move your head out the center line as you take a forward step with your left foot (11am).

Then you simultaneously loop your right hand over the jab to land your overhand right. For more momentum you move your right leg in along with it. This motion also closes the wideness of your stance.

Disadvantage Of Throwing An Overhand Right

When it comes to boxing or any self defense system out there, there’s going to be drawback of an attack. But the drawback shouldn’t prevent you from initiating an offense, because if you don’t you won’t win.

You simply can’t win a fight if you only use defense. In order to win a fight you have to have both a good defense and an offense strategy.

The drawback to any punch is a defense and counter punch. In this case with the overhand right your opponent would simply evaded the punch.

He would throw a jab, you counter with an overhand right, and he sees it coming and pulls back to avoid it. This would be a basic defense against the punch.

Your opponent can take this to another level by pulling back to avoid your right hand and countering with a right jab.

Another form of defense he can use is blocking your overhand right. He can use what we call “Answering the telephone” and block your punch by putting his whole arm to his ear and blocking it with his hand and forearm.

Ezekiel Choke From Bottom Guard

To go on the offensive end of things they will block and counter with a right jab. Again, every punch can be defended against and countered in order to give the opponent the upper hand, or at least stay in the competition.

If this is happening in the streets, expect the defense and counter. Remember it’s a fight and you should always assume the person you’re fighting knows some sort of self defense.

Never under estimate your opponent. Whether in the ring or in a street fight. If you assume the person who you are fighting in the street can’t fight, and it turns out that he can, you’re going to be in for a long night.

How To Throw, Setup & Land The Overhand Punch

Is the Overhand Punch The Strongest

I think the answer to this question is subjective. Some fighters say it is and some fighters think otherwise. There’s no way to actually measure if the overhand is the strongest because a punch is as strong as it is thrown.

And the overhand is thrown by many boxers across many different weight divisions. Punches thrown by a heavyweight may not have the same effect if it were to be thrown by a lightweight.

An overhand punch is known as a power punch because of the momentum it is thrown with. Same with a hook. But there is no way to see if it’s the strongest punch in boxing.

Are Overhand Punches Allowed In Boxing

Yes, overhand punches are allowed in boxing. These punches are not illegal and are well within the realm of legit punches that you can use against your opponent.

Overhand punches are power punches and depending how much momentum you throw with it, and if it lands clean, you can knock someone out with it.

Just like any punch that’s thrown it can miss its target and allow your opponent to counter with a punch of his own. This is the nature of boxing or any other self defense system in the world.

Is An Overhand A Haymaker

No, a overhand right is not a haymaker. A haymaker punch is more wild, wide, and you wind it up more. A overhand right should be a controlled looping punch, not a wild haymaker.

The overhand right shouldn’t be telegraphed. It’s a calculated punch in response to a jab. Can your overhand right be countered or defended against?

Yes it can. This is boxing and all punches can be defended against. So when you throw any punch, just keep in mind that it can be defended and countered.

The issue with the haymaker is that it can be telegraphed from a mile away because you have to wind up the punch. Professional boxers can see you winding up and will either throw a punch at you first, or wait until your punch comes their way and counter it.

The most recent boxer to use a haymaker the best, and has much success with it is none other than Deontay Wilder, the former heavyweight champ.

What Punches Knock People Out?

Any punch can knock someone out if you hit them with it hard enough. It can be a jab, cross, hook or uppercut.

If you throw it hard enough and it lands, the person will go down in paid. If it’s extremely hard the person can go into comatose. Meaning he’ll be knocked into a coma.

With proper medical attention the person can wake up from that coma. Sometimes the coma is too severe to wake up from and the person passes away.

One thing to remember is when you are fighting in the streets you have to use reasonable force to protect yourself.

If you knock someone out cold and end up in court, and the judge deems that you’ve used excessive force, you will be forced to pay a fine or even be put in jail.

It all depends on the situation and the evidence presented in court. Yes, this even goes for self defense.

Vital Points That Can Knock Someone Out

There are several points on your body that once hit with enough force, will drop you to the ground, or even knock you out.

Some of these vital points are listed below:

  • Nose
  • Temple
  • Back of your head
  • Jaw Bone
  • Ribs
  • Liver
  • Stomach
  • Privat Parts

You will see in any full contact sport that if a fighter is hit on any of these vital parts, then go down, or they’re completely knocked out cold.

If you are in a fight to save your life and use self defense, these main vital parts can allow you to subdue your assailant, while you make an escape.

Is Boxing Good For Self Defense

Boxing is known as the “Sweet Science” and is used all over the world as a self defense system in the streets, and for sport competition.

Boxing is actually recommended to get into for basic self defense because you can pick it up the move easily. In the first few lessons you can easily learn how to throw a punch properly and defend against one.

As you continue to train you learn more difficult techniques and the actual science of the defense system. It’s easier to learn than systems like Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai.

These martial arts takes years to master even on the basic levels. You have to get the positioning and techniques rights to advance within the system and it’s going to take time.

If you want a martial arts to get into that you can apply right away you should consider Karate or Taekwon Do. These are systems that you can pick up right away to defend yourself.

How To Throw A Lead Hook

In order to become a more well rounded puncher you need to learn How To Throw A Lead Hook. A hook is known as a power punch that if done correctly can knock out your opponent.

In this article you’ll learn how to throw a lead hook with perfect form, and how to throw power behind it in order to knock out your opponent.

How To Parry A Punch

Throw A Hook With Perfect Form

When learning how to throw a lead hook it’s best to learn the form your arm. Let’s start with the right hook. When throwing a hook you have to make sure your rotate your torso and angle your arm correctly. This type of punch is to be aimed anywhere on the side of your opponent. Whether it be the temple, side of the face (cheeks), rib cage etc.

In the orthodox stance you want to throw a punch with your arm bent at a 90 degree angle. In other words, you’re throwing a horizontal punch towards your opponent. When throwing the hook be sure to torque (rotate) your torso and shoulder, and pivot your lead foot slightly in order to give the punch optimum power.

Throwing A Short Hook

When throwing a short hook you have to consider the distance between you and your opponent. If your opponent is close within two to three feet from you, then the short hook can be used.

Throwing A Long Hook

When executing the long hook you are going to go through the same motions as the short hook, the only difference is you’ll have to extent your arm out a bit.

You’ll also have to extend your body forward a bit because your opponent won’t be in direct reach.

Throwing the long hook comes with a bit of a drawback, and that is you’ll throw it with less power than a short hook because your opponent is a bit further, and you’ll be rotating your shoulder and hips a lot less. But depending on how good you land it, you can still knock someone out with it.

Hand Positioning Of The Hook

When throwing a hook you have two options for the position of your fist. You can have your fist with your palm pointed towards you, or you can have your palm facing the ground.

To be honest there is no right way to do it, it’s just a matter of preference. Some fight it better to throw the hook with their palm face down, while others prefer their palm to be faced towards them

They’ll even give one or two reasons why they prefer one way over the other. The truth is it all boils down to preference and it’s okay to throw the hook whichever way you feel comfortable with.

Set Up Straight Or Cross

You can also use the lead hook as a way to set up a straight or cross. This all depends on the positioning of you and your opponent. If you miss with that punch of your free hand, then your opponent can easily counter with a punch of his own.

In fighting you have to strategize and take calculated risks in order to prevail. If you blindly throw a hook and then follow up just because it’s instinct, you’ll end up in a world of hurt.

Wild fighting can lead to you getting knocked out. Move strategic at all times, just like a game of chest. Remember, boxing is called the sweet science, so think before you move.

How To Throw The Right & Left Hooks

Barbo Choke From Closed Guard

Common Mistakes When Throwing The Hook

  • Your elbow is too low. When you throw a hook your forearm is to be parallel to the ground. You are throwing a vertical arc. When you throw a hook be sure that your elbow is not too low. This will decrease the power of the punch, making the hook ineffective.
  • Not rotating your hip, torso, shoulder. Forgetting to rotate your hip and shoulder will make your hook less powerful. Generating that kinetic energy through torque is important in order to knock your opponent out.
  • Throwing the hook too wide. When you throw a wide punch your opponent can telegraph that and counter you. When throwing a jab keep it nice and tight, and not wide.
  • Reaching back more than you need to. When throwing a job some people think that winding up their punch from behind them will give it more power. That’s not true. The power of a hook comes from the rotation of your hips/torso/shoulder. Winding up a punch is telegraphing it and your opponent defend and counter it with a punch.
  • Throwing the hook out of range. I’ve seen many beginners throw the hook out of range. Again, this type of move can be capitalized on by your opponent and he can really throw a counter punch to you that can be devastating. Hooks are to be nice and tight, thrown when your opponent is in striking range.
  • Dropping guard from the other hand. Often times you see both amateur and professional fighters execute a hook while dropping the opposite hand that’s guarding their face. Yes, you’ll even see pro fighters get too much into the moment and do this. This will leave your head wide open to get hit, so be careful
  • Punching straight through. The hook has a starting and ending point. You don’t want to punch the hook all the way through crossing your body. You will be susceptible to punches. Instead stop the hook when it reaches your centerline. Or in other words where it’s aligned to your nose.

Muay Thai Front Kick

Common Mistakes When Throwing A Left Hook

In conclusion the hook is an incredible punch to use to knock out your opponent. If it doesn’t knock him out it will at least shake him up, and leave him discombobulated enough for you to throw a series of follow up punches.

When throwing a hook remember to use proper technique and form. Always remember to rotate the half of your body that’s throwing the lead hook. Never wind up or over extend your hook, because it can lead to a counter punch from your opponent. Always finish the hook at the centerline of your body, and use it when your opponent is in striking distance.

How To Parry A Punch

Learning how to parry a punch can be of great value because it’s a good way to defend yourself in a fight. The word “parry” comes from fencing. In fencing, to parry an attack means to deflect the attack by using your sword to divert the opponent’s sword in another direction.

In this article I’m going to explain how effective this defense move is in the sport of boxing.

Using The Parry As A Defense Technique

In boxing, parrying is a basic yet effective defensive move that uses your opponent’s momentum against him.

A lot of boxing experts and also fighters say parrying is a superior defensive move to blocking because it offers more protection while creating better counter opportunities using your opponent’s energy.

The more your opponent over-commits his punches, the more effective your parry will be.

One thing to keep in mind is that as you face stronger opponents, blocking becomes a less likely option. Blocking still absorbs partial damage whereas parrying can deflect the attack away entirely.

There are a few ways to parry depending on where your opponent tries to punch you. Mastering these boxing parry techniques will allow you to defend yourself against any skilled assailant throwing punches against you.

How To Slip A Punch

Side Parry

The side parry is actually the first parry you are taught when learning boxing. When your opponent throws a punch towards you, parry it to the side.

If done correctly it will deflect the punch of your opponent and allow you to counter punch with a jab to the face or body.

Parrying The Jab and Cross

If your opponent is orthodox he will be jabbing you with his left hand. The best and most efficient way to parry his jab is by using your right hand. If he uses his cross you will defend yourself by parrying it with your left hand.

It’s important to note that if your opponent throws a jab at you, you shouldn’t try to parry it with your left hand. Firstly, you’re using the wrong hand to parry his jab with. Secondly, it leaves you open to a fake and switch.

Meaning the opponent will fake punching you to the chest or shoulder, and have you fall for it, because he knows you’re using the wrong hand to parry, and switch to hitting you in the face.

Or he can use his other free hand to throw another punch at you, because parrying with the wrong hand makes it hard for you to block a follow up punch.

Crucifix From Turtle Position

Parry and Counter Punch

When you parry a jab you can counter it with a jab of your own. So if you are in the orthodox stance, you would parry his jab with your right hand, step inward on and angle with your left leg while throwing a jab using your left arm. You want it all to be in one motion.

If you are in the southpaw stance, which is unorthodox, you want to do the motion in the opposite direction. When taking boxing lessons your coach will have you do the exercise on both sides anyway, because when in a match or real fight, you can be facing any opponent with either fighting style.

How To Kick Properly In MMA

If your opponent throws a cross you want to parry it and counter it with a cross of your own. Keep in mind there are a few ways to counter a cross off a parry, but countering with a cross is the simplest.

Counter Punching Off The Parry

Passing The Closed Guard

Loop Parry

The loop parry is a great technique to use to defend yourself against a punch to the body. Whether the punch is jab or cross to the body this defense will work. To execute the technique you simply have to use a looping motion with your hand to push your opponents punch to the side or down and away from your body.

The perfect fighter to watch execute this I none other than Floyd Mayweather. He was a master at using the loop parry to defend against body shots.

To execute this move it’s going to take good timing, but with practice you’ll catch on to it. When your opponent is throwing a punch to your body, use your palm to punch his punch away from your body.

One thing I would advise you to do for extra defense, when doing a loop parry, is move to either your left or right side.

The reason being is that if you loop parry and just stand there, you may be susceptible to follow up punches if your opponent chooses to do so.

For example, some boxers will throw combination punches, so if you loop parry a jab to the body and just stand there instead of moving out the way, you can get hit with a follow up punch from the opponent’s other hand, and then hit again with the initial hand that threw the jab to the body.

Those are combination punches. And combination punches are more effective at hitting an opponent more than a singular jab to the body or head.

So, it’s best to loop parry and get out of the way of any follow up punches, especially if it’s against a bigger opponent than you.

Advanced Parry Techniques for Landing More Punches

When parry punches there are a few things to keep in mind. This list will help you to use the parry to it’s optimal level, protecting you in the most sufficient way.

  • As I mentioned early, only parry straight punches. It allows you to quickly deflect the punch and counter. Hooks are bad for parrying especially against a stronger opponent, it would be better to slip or block hook punches.
  • Don’t parry with the wrong hand. As I stated before that parrying with the wrong hand will leave you exposed and get you hit every time. Follow the correct method in order to effectively protect yourself.
  • Don’t use the parry as a defense against straight punches all the time. If an opponent finds a consistent pattern when boxing you he will expose that. You’ll definitely get hurt in boxing being predictable because it makes it easier for your opponent to trick you. Use parrying, blocking, slips and other forms of defense to keep you opponent guessing.
  • Be discrete when parrying. When you parry it’s a subtle movement of push. You’re subtly pushing the punch away from you. If you do a big slap or push you’re leaving yourself open to get hit by your opponent’s free hand.
  • When you find an opening after a parry you should use it as an opportunity to counter punch. Keep in mind that you can not win a fight unless you throw punches that land. You can’t win a fight using defense alone, you have to throw punches.

MMA Standing Guillotine Choke

10 Counters for the Right Cross

Down Parry

This parry is as it says, a parry downward. When you opponent tries to punch you, you will use the palm of your hand to parry the punch downward. Again, the parry should be subtle and not a big slap.

When you parry down a punch you will notice that it will send your opponent leaning in because he’s unbalanced. This is the perfect time to counter punch him with a jab, hook or uppercut.

To effectively parry downward it’s best that you use your rare hand and keep your lead hand up guarding your chin. Always remember to use the right technique when parrying or it will leave you open and exposed to getting hit.

In conclusion using a parry against a straight punch is very affective. It’s a solid defense technique that allows you to avoid a punch, and also counter in order to inflict damage on your opponent.

When parrying a punch you can do it in many different ways such as a side parry, down parry, a loop parry, and my favorite a parry and counter. Always remember that when you parry it’s good to do so with a counter. You can only win a fight by hitting your opponent, defense alone does nothing for you.

And finally when you parry a punch try not to use it as your next line of defense. Mixed it up a bit so that you don’t become predictable to your opponent.

When your opponent can predict your next move he can trick you into doing that move while he sets you up for another type of punch. In order to be an effective boxer you have to mix up both your defense and offense.

How To Slip A Punch In Boxing

Our topic of discussion today is How To Slip A Punch In Boxing. “Slipping” as it is called in boxing and know other fighting systems around the world, is a technique similar to “bobbing”. It is considered one of the four basic defensive strategies, along with blocking, holding, and clinching. The slip is performed by moving the head to either side so that the opponent’s punches “slip” by the boxer.

When Boxers Slip Punches

The slip is a powerful defense move because if executed properly it can throw your opponent off balance and allow you to do a counter punch. It can also drain your opponents energy throwing punches and not landing any. He will become exausted punching the air because it’s draining throwing a punch and missing, in comparison to throwing a punch and hitting your target. As a fighter training in the gym you want to try and perfect this defensive move.

When learning defensive moves in the gym your training coach will also teach you how to block with your arm. This defense move is needed at times but can have a lot of wear on your arm during the match up and over time in general. Using the arm to block a punch or a defensive more ties up your arms and makes it hard for you to throw a counter punch at you opponent.

The slip defensive move would be more of a wise choice to use because it frees up your arms so you can counter punch. Learning to slip a punch can lay te foundation of you being a solid fighter. The objective of boxing is to hit and not get hit so often. The less you get hit the better off you’ll be in the long run.

How To Slip A Punch In Boxing

When slipping a punch you have to be careful in terms of knowing when to do it. You should never try and slip the first punch thown. In fact you never want to slip a single jab. The reason for this is that an experienced fighter will pick up on you slipping his jab and eventually fake a jab and connect with an uppercut. Instead a slip should be done while your opponent is throwing combination punches. This means when your opponent is throwing two or three punches at a time. Slipping a punch is done best when there is a constant exchange in punches between you and the opponent.

When slipping a punch be sure to slip to the outside of a punch and not the inside. The reason for this is that you have a better chance of countering the punch if you slip to the outside. If you slip to the inside of the punch you increase the chances of getting hit in the face with your opponents next hand. You never want to be directly in the line of someone punch, and slipping inside of  a punch instead of outside will do just that.

The Best Punches To Slip

The best punches to slip are not actually jabs, but bigger punches. The reason for this is that when someone throws a big punch they take a bit longer to recover their stance. When someone throws a big punch they are more off balanced and leave themselves wide open for counter punches.

Jabs, however, are fast punches that you can easily recover from if you miss your target. When you slip punches it’s best to slip head punches because it would be easier for you. In fact, it would make more sense for you to do so. For body shots you can always block them with your arm.

Slipping A Punch With Ease

Slipping a punch the right way takes practice. When slipping you want to use your legs not your back. Your legs are going to be the main thing that make your slip effective. A fighter like Mike Tyson is a good example of how to properly slip a punch. Mike Tyson use to use his legs to squat low and pivot to the right or left to slip a punch. Sometimes Mike would even bend his legs to get low under a punch and counter with an uppercut. Slipping with ease is bending your legs to lower yourself then rotate your body to the side you are slipping to.

What you don’t want to do is bend your back to slip a punch. The reason for this is that if you use your back to slip the punch you will become off balanced to do a counter strike. The best slip is not only avoiding getting hit but also countering with your own punch in order to score points. Another reason why you shouldn’t slip with your back is that over a period of time you will cause wear and tear on your lower back. This is something you don’t want as a boxer because your body is your prize. The more wear and tear your body goes through the more it slows you down; even put you into retirement.
